The Socialist Calculation Debate
Jonas G. Lipski ()
Chapter 4 in Evaluating Competing Explanatory Games in Economics, 2025, pp 112-149 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Using the conceptual framework developed before, I analyze the Calculation Debate between Mises and Lange. After describing the content of the debate, I subject it to normative evaluation. The most important difference between the two competing approaches is the Austrian emphasis on realism versus Lange's emphasis on idealization. The Austrian approach represented by Mises seems superior for several reasons. The most important one is that Lange's instrumentalist methodology actually is inconsistent with Lange's contribution to this debate. Thus, either the methodology of Lange or his contribution to this debate ought to be rejected.
