Decoupling agricultural production from environmental sustainability

Rosanna Salvia (), Giovanni Quaranta (), Marco Maialetti () and Luca Salvati ()

Chapter 4 in Rural Sustainability and Competitiveness, 2025, pp 50-67 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter illustrates an integrated and comparative analysis of specialized cereal farms in Europe based on official statistics collected within the integrated network of farm accounting (FADN). The related indicators have been implemented, maximizing the information assets within FADN surveys over time, with reference to both areal measurements and monetary values. The former indicators were assumed to be relevant metrics in environmental analysis, the latter being more suitable for regional analysis. By providing a comprehensive description of the holistic functioning of farms in a given territory, input data considered in this empirical exercise refer to both economic performance and the characteristic (social and productive) context, as well as to ecological performance in a broad sense, with a specific focus on the use of productive inputs, nutrients, water, and soil resources. This interpretative rationale has been indirectly connected with the farm (economic) dimension – intended as an appropriate stratification variable reflecting environmental efficiency, corporate sustainability and green agriculture at the regional scale.
