Abstract: A comprehensive analysis of sustainable production and the relationship between economic and environmental dimensions in European farms was carried out using official statistics derived from the integrated network of farm accounting (FADN), focusing on farms specialized in vine production. The analysis was based on a multivariate strategy aimed at exploring and identifying the latent association between production techniques and inputs, land use, assets, subsidies and final yields as a function of the average farm dimensions (considering both physical and economic size) and geography. Based on the availability of aggregate survey data, a vast set of indicators representative of the different analysis dimensions (ecological, social, economic) were chosen. The empirical analysis outlined a rather heterogeneous picture by reference to ecological and productive performance, both with respect to regional (environmental) specificities and the economic farm dimension. Ecological targets seem to be associated with subsidized farms. These farms are, in turn, more responsive to selected social targets. Economic performances show an evident variability over space and depend on the physical size of farms, reflecting the inherent (territorial) complexity in any rural development process. These farms are rather homogeneous as far as production inputs are concerned, making substitutability among production inputs a challenging task to assess and interpret.
