Chapter 11 in Video 2040, 2026, pp 208-223 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the concept of interactivity in video media, where users can influence and alter the content presented to them. Interactivity can take various forms, including branching storylines, user interfaces, involvement in content creation, and participation. The chapter identifies examples of interactive video that feature multiple endings or various story combinations, as well as interactive video where players control avatars and shape the narrative. It addresses the potential benefits and challenges of interactivity, highlighting the need for narrative continuity and fluency, along with the importance of balancing user choice and authorial control. Additionally, it examines the history of interactive video, noting its success in video games but limited adoption in entertainment films. Overall, interactivity has the potential to transform how we engage with video content, but its implementation so far has been limited.
