The poor track record of building blocks for Video 4.0
Eli Noam
Chapter 13 in Video 2040, 2026, pp 242-245 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the discussion of the preceding chapters about the challenges and the potential of next-generation video technologies, including immersive, interactive, and personalized experiences. Despite advancements in building blocks such as 3D, VR/AR, and blockchain, these technologies have struggled to gain widespread adoption owing to technical, content creation, user experience, and business challenges. The chapter highlights the difficulties of integrating new technologies with existing hardware and industry practices, as well as the need for a compelling value proposition to drive user engagement. With only a small number of active VR users and limited content offerings, the future of next-generation video remains uncertain. However, the chapter suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) could be a key factor in overcoming these challenges and creating a more powerful and integrated video experience. The potential role of AI in shaping the future of video is explored as a possible solution to the industry's current limitations.
