What Video 4.0 might look like
Eli Noam
Chapter 17 in Video 2040, 2026, pp 312-339 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the future of video media, focusing on the convergence of games, film, and social media. The emergence of “gilm”—a blend of games and films, characterized by engagement, challenge, participation, and social interaction—is discussed. The chapter also examines the role of artificial intelligence in enabling interactivity, immersion, and avatars, allowing users to participate in content creation. User-generated content and its hosting platforms are analyzed. The chapter concludes that the future of video media will be more experiential, gamified, and participatory, with a shift toward more visual, shorter, and sensational content. The video experience will become more experiential and more action-oriented, and less news and fact-oriented. The role of creators will become more demanding.
