Societal implications

Chapter 22 in Video 2040, 2026, pp 436-460 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the societal implications of Video 4.0, the next generation of video media. New types of media organizations will emerge, with new business and content models. Critics often take a dystopian perspective as they identify potential consequences of a media system dominated by experiential and interactive video. This includes the negative impact on employment, equity, and privacy, the enormous acceleration of cultural change, the spread of sensationalism and disinformation, and the erosion of human experience. It argues that the shift to virtual experiences will result in a loss of hands-on, real-world interactions and a diminished capacity for human connection. But the positive opportunities presented by Video 4.0 are high and will be part of augmenting traditional experiences.
