Eli Noam

Chapter 9 in Video 2040, 2026, pp 177-197 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores immersion in video media, including 3D, Virtual Reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR). The chapter examines the applications of these technologies in film, television, video games, and other media, highlighting their potential to create engaging and interactive experiences. It also addresses the constraints of VR content, including ergonomic and technical limitations. It discusses the reasons for past and recent failures of immersion technologies to take hold, and how technology might overcome these through goggle-free displays. The chapter discusses the role of VR in entertainment content as well as in news and documentaries.
