Anna Visvizi, Igor Calzada, Krzysztof Kozłowski and Orlando Troisi

Chapter 1 in Multidisciplinary Movements in AI and Generative AI, 2025, pp 1-16 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The onset of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related technologies and applications, such as Generative AI (GenAI), has spurred a vibrant discourse about its societal, economic, and political impacts, emphasizing both opportunities and challenges. This book critically examines the mechanisms through which AI and GenAI influence politics, including modes of governance, education, and business sectors, with a focus on their alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Organized into three thematic parts, the volume explores regulatory frameworks, the transformation of higher education, and practical applications in industries such as healthcare and agriculture. Through case studies bridging the Global North and the Global South, the book underscores the importance of sustainability, inclusivity, and the ethical use of AI. By advancing trust-building frameworks and showcasing actionable insights, it provides a comprehensive roadmap for harnessing AI responsibly, thus ensuring the equitable distribution of the benefits it bears. By reading this book, scholars, policymakers, and practitioners will have the opportunity to identify valuable tools and perspectives to navigate the evolving AI landscape. Therefore, they will also be able, each in their specific domains, to foster resilience and democratic integrity in the digital age. Through a lens of decentralization and Web3 technologies, this book highlights pathways through which to align AI with ethical principles and equitable outcomes. Offering practical case studies and actionable insights, it serves as a resource for fostering sustainable, inclusive, and trustworthy AI systems that empower communities globally, regionally, and locally.
