AI-enhanced public speaking and its applications: a systematic literature review

Radosław Malik and Yuanping Yu

Chapter 12 in Multidisciplinary Movements in AI and Generative AI, 2025, pp 220-241 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This study employs a systematic literature review (SLR) to examine the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in public speaking and speechwriting, aiming to identify the current state of research and uncover existing gaps in this rapidly evolving field. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, the research conducts a qualitative analysis of 22 texts, selected from an initial dataset of 213 entries sourced from the Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databases. The review identifies key applications of AI in four main areas: speech evaluation, quality prediction, anxiety reduction, and public speaking training. The research shows that while AI has shown significant impact in enhancing speech evaluation and quality prediction, its application in reducing speech anxiety and improving training is still in early developmental stages. The study also highlights critical gaps in the literature, including the lack of research on the potential use of AI for manipulation, propaganda, and misinformation in public speaking. Future research should explore these darker applications, as well as further develop and validate AI technologies to support virtual training environments and improved speechwriting practices.
