Chapter 3 in Multidisciplinary Movements in AI and Generative AI, 2025, pp 35-48 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines the interplay between social acceleration and trust in artificial intelligence (AI) and its effects on the quality of life in the digital era. In a society characterized by constant change, driven by rapid technological advancements and an increasing reliance on technology, the relationships between swift social transformation, trust in AI, and its impact on everyday life, are of paramount importance. The concept of social acceleration, as proposed by theorists such as Hartmut Rosa, delineates the accelerated expansion of temporal structures in modern society. This acceleration has been exacerbated by technological advances such as automation and digitization, which have fundamentally altered how we live, work, and relate. Trust in science and technology plays a pivotal role in this relationship. Modern societies have placed their trust in science as a driver of progress and enhancer of the quality of life. However, the technological acceleration characteristic of late modernity can erode this trust if ethical and social concerns related to AI are not adequately addressed. Studies on trust in science have become indispensable for understanding how people perceive and embrace these emerging technologies. The advent of generative intelligence, such as ChatGPT, has introduced new challenges. These technologies have the potential to enhance creativity, productivity, and access to information. Nevertheless, they have also raised concerns regarding privacy, mental health, and quality of life. Understanding these relationships is essential for addressing emerging challenges in a rapidly evolving digital world. This involves considering and reflecting on both the benefits and implications for the quality of life and mental health of individuals when adopting these technologies, with the aim of striking a balance between technological progress and human well-being.
