Chapter 6 in Multidisciplinary Movements in AI and Generative AI, 2025, pp 98-114 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is at the forefront of the digital revolution, and it is significantly influencing educational institutions. AI and other technologies are changing the concept of literacy, making these alterations a relevant concern at the educational level and affecting higher education frameworks. Bringing together perspectives from learning, teaching, and management, this study delves into the multidimensional idea of digital literacy in higher education to better understand how AI, specifically Generative AI, could affect students’ digital literacy. To this end, quantitative research methods are applied to examine how Generative AI influences teaching and learning in higher education institutions (HEIs). To do so, a random selection of college students was surveyed to determine what stands in the way of assessing and encouraging the integration of AI and digital literacy. The objective was to provide an empirical exploration of the relationships between AI and digital literacy, considering the influential role of students’ interaction, their perception of instructional technology, and pedagogical approaches. This chapter addresses a gap in present-day conceptions of education by bringing AI's revolutionary impact into scholarly discussions on literacy. Its purpose is to help students succeed in today's academically automated world by integrating the more traditional framework of knowledge, competencies, and skills with a more contemporary and up-to-date approach to digital literacy in higher education. Showing how AI-driven dynamics impact students’ digital literacy will give teachers data-driven techniques to use AI in the classroom, assisting institutions in utilizing AI technologies to improve digital literacy outcomes in educational environments.
