Chapter 8 in Understanding Child Welfare, 2026, pp 152-169 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Employment in child welfare services is frequently very challenging, often deeply rewarding, and always vitally important. This chapter provides information about the child welfare workforce, the working conditions in child welfare, and some aspects of the profession that make the work especially taxing. Efforts to strengthen the child welfare workforce and improve experiences of child welfare professionals and their clients are examined. Critical debates regarding the child welfare workforce consider how technology should be used to support practice; how best to provide effective supervision; and the value of graduate-level training.
