Embodying care as a core capacity in health psychology: Learning through compassion-based meditation
Paul Condon
Chapter 9 in Teaching Health Psychology, 2026, pp 130-145 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter presents core principles for teaching students how to embody care and explore how that experience can help illuminate several foundational concepts and applications in health psychology. To achieve this aim, the chapter presents two compassion-based meditation practices that help establish an internal sense of care. It emphasizes best practices for establishing a context where students can engage with meditation practices according to their unique goals and diverse cultural, scientific, and religious backgrounds. In particular, it describes the construction of an ‘open secular space’ in contrast to a ‘closed secular space’ while exploring two specific forms of compassion practice that educators can teach within a health psychology course/unit. It also provides guidelines and practical resources to support experiential contemplative learning and intellectual inquiry.
