Integrative approaches to teaching sleep psychology

Jor M. Grapentine, John Richmond T. Sy and Jessica R. Dietch

Chapter 10 in Teaching Health Psychology, 2026, pp 146-159 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Sleep health is an often-overlooked pillar of mental and physical health, with most undergraduate students receiving little instruction in it. Sleep health refers to the multidimensional pattern of sleep and wake within an individual context, including biological, social, and environmental needs, that supports optimal health and wellbeing. This chapter argues for the essential inclusion of sleep health instruction in the undergraduate context and discusses the role of sleep psychology as an emerging discipline within health psychology. It suggests an underlying theoretical approach to teaching sleep health within an upper-level undergraduate course/unit. It also suggests an underlying theoretical approach to teaching sleep health within the context of a single unit, an extended module, or an entire course/unit. Throughout, it suggests ways to incorporate themes of sleep health equity and the role of sleep as a social justice issue.
