Training and translation in clinical health psychology

Chloe Maxwell-Smith, Hayley Breare and Alejandro Dominguez Garcia

Chapter 11 in Teaching Health Psychology, 2026, pp 160-173 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores clinical health psychology under the broader health psychology umbrella and provides recommendations for tertiary education of psychology and health sciences students. Clinical health psychology refers to the biological, psychological, social, and behavioural management of health and prevention of disease in diverse populations and settings. As our population ages, individuals are increasingly living with chronic diseases. Therefore, clinical health psychology priorities include disease prevention, treatment, and management. Clinical health psychology professionals should receive training to support patients/clients through significant psychological and behavioural barriers to engaging with health behaviours, accessing health services, and maintaining medical regimes. These and other behavioural determinants of disease necessitate training to increase awareness of determinants of health and to deliver behavioural advice, including behaviour change strategies. This chapter describes strategies for teaching clinical health psychology and considers directions for collaborative, multidisciplinary care to reduce the prevalence and burden of disease.
