Interactive learning strategies for teaching interdisciplinary models of stress and health

Guido G. Urizar and Jesus Reyes

Chapter 14 in Teaching Health Psychology, 2026, pp 200-215 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Health psychology courses/units provide students with a unique opportunity to learn about important societal health issues from a biopsychosociocultural perspective. However, students taking these courses/units often report feeling anxious about learning the underlying biological mechanisms that affect health outcomes, particularly as they relate to stress and disease. Therefore, interactive learning approaches are needed to promote student confidence and active engagement with course/unit content to develop a deeper understanding and ability to apply important course/unit concepts. This chapter describes an undergraduate health psychology course/unit that implemented an interactive learning approach to interdisciplinary models of stress and health (for example, students testing their saliva for cortisol levels and creating an arts-based epigenetic model). The authors describe the course/unit curriculum, present student feedback, and discuss implications and recommendations for implementing these high-impact pedagogies in future health courses/units.
