Working with simulated patients to facilitate the application of health psychology models and interprofessional learning

Melissa Oxlad

Chapter 16 in Teaching Health Psychology, 2026, pp 231-244 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Health psychology is an area that often captures students’ interest due to its relevance to everyday life. Finding creative ways to include experiential activities in health psychology teaching offers valuable opportunities for students to consolidate their knowledge through application. This chapter first briefly discusses the use of simulated patients in psychology education. It then details examples of two ways that educators can work with simulated patients in undergraduate psychology. The first example demonstrates how educators can include simulated patients in their teaching to enable students to apply health psychology models, while the second example illustrates working with standardized patients in interprofessional learning. The chapter concludes with suggestions for best practice when working with simulated patients in health psychology education, and discusses extending experiential learning to use virtual patients.
