Teaching health psychology through dynamic and innovative methodologies

Dimitra Tatiana Anastasiadou and Albert Feliu-Soler

Chapter 18 in Teaching Health Psychology, 2026, pp 259-277 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In a rapidly evolving higher education landscape shaped by competency-based learning, continuous assessment, and technological innovation, rethinking traditional teaching methodologies has become essential. This chapter describes how to teach health psychology through blended, student-centred approaches that foster critical thinking and social responsibility. It outlines the use of collaborative project-based learning (e.g., identifying environmental determinants of health), experiential activities (e.g., mindfulness practice, exercises to challenge stigmatizing attitudes, role-playing for clinical communication, and emotional self-monitoring via a mobile app), and active learning strategies (e.g., classroom debates, critical appraisal of scientific literature, and interactive quizzes using Wooclap). It also discusses the ethical integration of artificial intelligence, including GPT-based chatbots for simulating patient–provider interactions and digital portfolios to enhance metacognitive development. It concludes with practical guidance to support educators in adapting and implementing these methods across diverse health psychology education settings.
