Fostering research literacy in health psychology

Chloe Maxwell-Smith, Thomas McAlpine and Scott Devenport

Chapter 2 in Teaching Health Psychology, 2026, pp 32-45 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the importance of training approaches in research methods and the value of research literacy for health psychology professionals. Despite students’ anxiety around engaging in research methods and statistical skills modules, such content remains instrumental for professional pathways, including working as a scientist-practitioner, conducting research, supporting the translation of knowledge, and training future health psychology professionals. This chapter suggests pedagogical exercises for students to practise critical research evaluation skills, emphasizing pragmatic research designs for addressing real-world research problems. Further, it suggests ideas for supporting students in accessing and comprehending research literature to ensure that knowledge translation remains accessible as a priority for health professionals in practice. We conclude with recommendations to equip students with a toolkit to support accessible approaches to research and practical insights for fostering collaborative healthcare.
