Incorporating intersectionality theory in health psychology teaching

Abstract: This chapter discusses intersectionality theory, aiming to empower novice and experienced teachers to incorporate intersectionality into their health psychology course/unit design and teaching practices. It focuses on multiple interlocking systems of privilege and oppression that challenge the reductionist view of focusing on individual decision-making and considering social structural determinants in isolation. Some topics included are health disparities, how multiple axes of privilege or minoritized status impact access to health-promoting spaces or activities, and healthcare policies. The chapter provides sample student learning outcomes, readings, discussion topics, and assignments to help educators start or enhance the inclusion of intersectional considerations, depending on their prior experience and preferences.
