The important role of experiential learning in teaching and promoting health behaviours

Robert R. Wright

Chapter 8 in Teaching Health Psychology, 2026, pp 119-129 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: When considering student learning outcomes, it is difficult to overemphasize the importance of experiential learning, where principles can be applied and reinforce factual and conceptual learning. This chapter outlines three ways that may elevate health promotion learning through experiential learning among undergraduate students. First, a health behaviour change project with three distinct phases, preferably implemented within the first few weeks of the study period, to illustrate the challenges and importance of promoting health behaviours. Second, during the mid to latter parts of the study period, a nutrition improvement project can help students to realize healthy nutrition's pivotal role in health and wellbeing through a mindset change intervention. Finally, a research team experience that draws from students in a health psychology class may be a good option for undergraduate students seeking more research-based experiential learning outside of the classroom.
