Globalisations and the challenges for societies

Bent Greve

Chapter 6 in Concise Introduction to Financing Welfare States, 2026, pp 83-89 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Chapter 6 focuses on the challenges for welfare states such as globalisation, free movement of capital and goods, as well as the use of platforms to deliver different types of services, but also what has been done and what the impact hereof can be. The international competition among countries to reduce especially the level of taxation of companies and by attracting companies to locate in a country is part of the issues that are discussed. It also includes the risk that rich people migrate to countries with lower levels of taxation and thereby reduce the ability to finance welfare states. The chapter also discusses how countries alone or in co-operation try to cope with the challenges.
