Thermodynamic depth and physical surplus
Clair Quentin
Chapter 2 in Capital, Revenue and the Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics of Value, 2026, pp 23-37 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explains what thermodynamic depth is and shows how it answers the ‘value question’ as framed in Chapter 1. Thermodynamic depth's relation to labor is set out, that is, labor may be characterized as the sole source of the surplus thermodynamic depth embodied by commodities. That discussion is followed by a simple Sraffian model of surplus thermodynamic depth as yielded by the production of commodities by means of commodities.
