The Concept of Foreign Direct Investment

Imad A. Moosa

Chapter 1 in Understanding the Geopolitics of Foreign Direct Investment, 2026, pp 1-24 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a cornerstone of neoliberal globalisation, just like it was a cornerstone of colonial globalisation. It involves the acquisition by an entity from one country of productive assets in another country, where the “entity” can be an individual, a firm, or the government (represented by a state-owned enterprise or a sovereign wealth fund). While geopolitical factors have played a major role in shaping the magnitude and direction of FDI flows since 1990, this role has assumed increasing importance since 2020 as a result of the pandemic, the US-China trade war and the war in Ukraine. The return of Donald Trump to the White House has further reinforced the role of geopolitics.
