Chapter 4 in Understanding the Geopolitics of Foreign Direct Investment, 2026, pp 81-107 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Geopolitical power can be defined crudely as the ability of a country to get what it wants in the face of opposition, which also means the ability of a country to prevent other countries from getting what they want. It can be tangible (such as military assets) or intangible (such as international reputation). It can also be classified into hard, soft and smart. The mode of exercising geopolitical power can be military, economic, diplomatic, cultural, and legal. Geopolitical power is typically measured by a single indicator, such as GDP and military spending, or the composite indicator of national capability (CINC). A composite index of geopolitical power is constructed and calculated for selected countries as a weighted average of a large number of indicators.
