Imad A. Moosa
Chapter 6 in Understanding the Geopolitics of Foreign Direct Investment, 2026, pp 148-169 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Several issues arising from the geopolitics and political economy of FDI are discussed in this chapter. The topics include how FDI influences domestic policies and economic stability, the global economic governance system within which FDI operates, the operations of sovereign wealth funds and state-owned enterprises, national security reviews of proposed FDI projects, the risks associated with foreign investments in critical sectors, cybersecurity and data sovereignty, and geopolitical tension and its effects on global supply chain resilience. Overall, factors pertaining to the geopolitics and political economy of FDI underscore the need for countries to balance the benefits of FDI with the preservation of sovereignty and national security.
