Economic Cooperation Pacts as a Geopolitical Tool

Chapter 8 in Understanding the Geopolitics of Foreign Direct Investment, 2026, pp 190-211 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Economic cooperation pacts transcend mere economic cooperation. They have long been a tool that is used for political influence, geopolitical alignment, and global power projection. Economic cooperation has become a cornerstone of international relations, reflecting shifts in global power dynamics and the interplay between economics and geopolitics. Beyond their ostensible purpose of boosting trade and economic growth, economic cooperation pacts serve as a means of shaping global power dynamics, strengthen alliances, and project influence. While economic cooperation pacts offer numerous advantages, they are subject to several criticisms. Economic cooperation pacts are far more than being tools for economic integration; they represent a powerful instrument of geopolitical strategy.
