Introduction to Connecting Europe and China

Richard Pomfret

Chapter 1 in Connecting Europe and China, 2026, pp 1-5 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This book describes EU and Chinese efforts to establish a Middle Corridor, avoiding Russia to the north or Iran to the south by crossing the Caspian Sea. The analysis is book-length because there is no simple answer to the Middle Corridor's prospects. The countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus pursue their own interests. Both the EU and China have complex decision-making procedures, and both have other important relations, notably between the EU and USA and between China and Russia. Since 2019 the official EU position is that China is a partner for cooperation, an economic competitor and a systemic rival. The overland rail connection, which has thrived since 2010, is an example of cooperation, especially after sanctions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 threatened the rail service.
