The Caucasus and Türkiye
Richard Pomfret
Chapter 4 in Connecting Europe and China, 2026, pp 52-70 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This and the next chapter analyse the situation in the countries along the Middle Corridor between Europe and China. Every Middle Corridor train must cross the Caspian Sea to or from Baku. The main Middle Corridor routes between Baku and Europe use the Baku–Tbilisi railway, and then ship across the Black Sea from Georgia to Romania or Bulgaria or continue by rail from Tbilisi to Kars and then to Turkish ports. Türkiye has taken a more positive attitude towards Azerbaijan and Central Asia since the late 2010s and is anxious to expand Middle Corridor traffic. The political situation in the Caucasus is fluid as peace may be reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia, while Georgian domestic politics are fraught.
