The Central Asian countries

Richard Pomfret

Chapter 5 in Connecting Europe and China, 2026, pp 71-87 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Between the Caspian Sea and China, the Middle Corridor can pass through several routes involving one or more of the five Central Asian countries. Since independence in 1991, the economic fortunes of the Central Asian countries have been largely determined by a few primary products (oil and gas, minerals and cotton). After the end of the resource boom and with changes in leadership since 2016, the countries turned to export diversification. They are strong supporters of the Middle Corridor, which will improve their connectivity to international markets. Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic are also supportive of the new railway from Kashi to Central Asia. However, there is potential for competition between the Central Asian countries for investment in different Middle Corridor routes.
