Introduction to employee engagement

Alan M. Saks and Jamie A. Gruman

Chapter 1 in Concise Introduction to Employee Engagement, 2026, pp 1-10 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Employee engagement is important, because it is positively related to employee attitudes, behaviors, health, and well-being, as well as organizational outcomes. When compared to other variables, employee engagement is often a better predictor of work outcomes. However, only a small percentage of employees around the globe are highly engaged, and most employees are disengaged. A model of employee engagement consists of antecedents, process variables, employee engagement, employee outcomes, and organizational outcomes. Employee engagement is a competitive advantage for organizations.
