The meaning of employee engagement

Alan M. Saks and Jamie A. Gruman

Chapter 2 in Concise Introduction to Employee Engagement, 2026, pp 11-30 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Employee engagement is a multidimensional motivational state that involves the simultaneous investment of cognitive, emotional, and physical energies into role performances. It is a more complete and holistic representation of the self than other organizational variables and it is a dynamic state that changes and fluctuates over time and across situations. The target of employee engagement can be a task, job, team, business unit or department, and organization.
