The measurement of employee engagement

Alan M. Saks and Jamie A. Gruman

Chapter 4 in Concise Introduction to Employee Engagement, 2026, pp 55-83 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Many scales have been developed to measure employee engagement. Most are based on Kahn's (1990) conceptualization of personal engagement or the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, which is based on the literature about burnout. They focus on the job or work and measure job or work engagement. However, measures of employee engagement can vary in terms of the target and the referent of engagement. Research that has compared measures of employee engagement has found that although different measures are related, they are not the same or interchangeable. Furthermore, the relationships between employee engagement and its antecedents and consequences are dependent on the scale used. When measuring employee engagement, it is important to avoid items that overlap with items used to measure other variables such as job satisfaction and organizational commitment.
