Human resources management and employee engagement

Alan M. Saks and Jamie A. Gruman

Chapter 6 in Concise Introduction to Employee Engagement, 2026, pp 106-121 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Human resource management (HRM) practices are important antecedents of employee engagement that provide employees with job resources that can improve their personal resources and minimize job demands. Individual HRM practices such as training, as well as bundles or systems of HRM practices, have been found to be positively related to employee engagement. HRM is most effective for facilitating employee engagement when there is an integrated HRM strategy and system that is focused on employee engagement, and when there is a system of caring HRM practices that help employees satisfy their needs and promote employee growth, health, and well-being. HRM practices are among the most important antecedents of employee engagement.
