Getting newcomers engaged

Alan M. Saks and Jamie A. Gruman

Chapter 7 in Concise Introduction to Employee Engagement, 2026, pp 122-139 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The engagement of newcomers will fluctuate during the entry-socialization process. Newcomer engagement maintenance curves indicate that a newcomers’ engagement can increase, decrease, or remain stable when they enter an organization. Socialization resources are required to increase and maintain the engagement of newcomers. The extent to which socialization resources are provided to newcomers will influence whether newcomer engagement will decline, increase, or remain stable. Socialization resources should be provided to newcomers before, during, and after the formal socialization program in order to maintain and develop high levels of engagement. Socialization resources are important for newcomer engagement, adjustment, and socialization.
