Carpenter Lietz Chapter 11 in How to Build Resilience in College Students, 2026, pp 112-120 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: As college students demonstrate resilience, commitment is one of the protective factors that remains highly relevant for this population. When put in the context of a resilience framework, commitment involves setting a goal and sticking with it. For students who come to college with a background of loss, trauma, or other difficulties, they have a lot to overcome to ensure their academic success. For students without challenges, maintaining a high level of commitment bodes well for their achieving their goals. Having both short- and long-term goals fueled by an undeniable drive to move forward is evident in the students we have seen be successful in their educational pursuits. In this chapter, we will offer strategies that professionals working in college settings can employ as they seek to help students set goals, ignite their passion, and work to maintain the motivation needed to succeed. Like the other chapters, we will close with one student's story of resilience that illustrates the importance of commitment in the process of resilience for college students.
