A typology of resilience

Cynthia A. Lietz and Breanna M. Carpenter Lietz

Chapter 3 in How to Build Resilience in College Students, 2026, pp 25-38 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Resilience is a process of coping and adaptation that occurs over time. In this chapter, we present Lietz's typology of resilience that includes five stations and 10 protective factors that describe the process of coping and adaptation. This chapter focuses on the stations of resilience, including a discussion of how protective factors are beneficial in different ways at each station. The 10 protective factors are introduced in this chapter and then described in far greater detail in the following 10 chapters.
