From industry trends to firm practice: a case study of smart-system integration in the digitalizing yacht sector

Attilio Mucelli

Chapter 10 in A Modern Guide to Industrial Economics, 2026, pp 172-188 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The global yachting industry represents one of the most distinctive and technologically advanced segments of the maritime sector, integrating high-value manufacturing, sophisticated naval architecture, and luxury service provision. Over the past three decades, the industry has been shaped by two structural forces: globalization, which has expanded markets, supply chains, and collaborative networks across continents, and digitalization, which is transforming every stage of the vessel lifecycle from conceptual design to operational management. In this context, the competitive advantage of firms depends not only on brand heritage and artisanal craftsmanship, but increasingly on the capacity to integrate emergent technologies that enhance operational efficiency, environmental performance, as well as client experience. The book chapter explores the dynamics of the industry, leveraging literature review, trend analysis, and the analysis of a case study of a tech firm operating in Italy.
