The role of management practices and open eco-innovation in the grain-water-energy nexus

Abstract:
This chapter analyses the influence of management practices on open eco-innovation to reduce grain loss and waste of water and energy. The data were collected from 175 of the largest grain companies in Brazil. To test the hypotheses, structural equation modelling was used. The results show that effective management practices have a significant positive influence on open eco-innovation, which is important for planning and control, improving energy and water consumption efficiency, and reducing grain loss. The empirical evidence reveals the important role of resources and processes involving internal and external capacities dedicated to environmental innovation. These concerted endeavours not only facilitate a more cautious exploitation of natural resources, such as energy and water, but also catalyse a tangible reduction in grain loss. For industrial policy, governments need to promote public–private partnerships, infrastructure investments, regulations, and workforce training programmes aligned with sustainability goals.
