Abstract:
Digital technologies are transforming economic and social systems, disrupting production chains and organisational processes. This chapter reviews the impact of blockchain technology by examining its applications in supply chain traceability. The focus of the analysis is on those sectors, such as agri-food and fashion, where customers and firms are expected to be concerned about the origin of raw materials and the location of production processes. Despite the increasing attention to supply chains’ traceability by policymakers, the adoption of blockchain technology by firms remains limited. The analysis identifies the structural and organisational barriers to the diffusion of blockchain technology as well as the enabling factors that could foster its adoption. Policy implications are discussed to support the integration of blockchain in the traceability of supply chains, enhancing transparency, data integrity and trust which are of value to both final customers and firms involved in the production chain.
