Introduction: getting started

Beverly Yuen Thompson

A chapter in How To Write an Academic Journal Article in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 1-15 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This introduction overviews the first steps of establishing an academic writing practice. As one is taking graduate classes, or in the early stages of an academic career, one can assess their university requirements for publication and where one hopes to fit into the academic scholarship. As one reads the literature of one's discipline and subdisciplines, the academic journals and conferences associated with these areas should become apparent. In graduate school, cohort friendships and writing groups can develop among interested members seeking social support for this usually solitary practice. This chapter orients the aspiring scholar to initial considerations at the beginning of one's scholarly journey. The technical aspects include having a variety of articles at different stages of development, establishing a routine, and accepting that failure is a significant part of the writing process.
