 A writing scheduleBeverly Yuen Thompson Chapter 4 in How To Write an Academic Journal Article in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 58-68 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: Many begin academic writing in graduate school where some—those who are not working full time—have extensive time for reading, writing, and reflection. They begin to associate this free time as a requirement for large-scale research projects. Yet, most academic writing will be conducted while working full time. Thus, establishing a realistic writing practice that sets aside a scheduled time to write and a mechanism to protect this scheduled task is essential to the practice of completing the article. This chapter focuses on creating a realistic writing schedule to fit one's abilities. The first task is to understand the publishing requirements of one's current institution and to establish a practice that fits the expectation. This chapter focuses on creating a habit of writing by having a consistent location, maintaining an enforceable schedule, using to-do lists, finding a writing community, taking breaks, and focusing on the big picture of your publication trajectory and the long-term structure that can foster this outcome.
