Chapter 6 in How To Write an Academic Journal Article in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 82-87 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Drafting the article should be a distinct process from editing. First, one freely puts their ideas onto the page before subjecting the writing to scrutiny, which can inhibit the flow. Editing is a craft developed through the practice of receiving feedback and integrating it into rewriting. Once an article is drafted, the first editorial layer targets the structure: ensuring that sections are in the appropriate order and contain the proper information. Then, each section should be reviewed at the paragraph level to assess the logical sequencing of the materials. Finally, line edits, shifting around sentences, pruning the writing, and assessing word choice provide the final touches. At this stage, the author ensures the writing conforms to the journal formatting requirements, including references.
