Chapter 2 in Developing Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, 2026, pp 13-40 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter discusses three issues. First, we consider how entrepreneurial activities are spatially arranged. Place and space are established as fundamental, and a contextual understanding of spatial scale and boundaries is required to advance understanding of entrepreneurial ecosystems. Second, we consider how the identification of institutional elements contributes to understanding of entrepreneurial ecosystems in both theory and practice. We emphasise that this approach lacks a depth of understanding about how institutional elements coalesce to make an entrepreneurial ecosystem function. The extant literature does not clearly identify non-entrepreneur stakeholders or fully explain their role within the entrepreneurial ecosystem despite their close association with institutional elements. Third, we argue that despite the centrality of entrepreneurs to the entrepreneurial ecosystem concept, we lack an understanding of their experiences and perceptions of institutional elements, and this results in a lack of understanding about who an entrepreneur is and how they experience the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
