Ecosystem development work

Laura I.H Bennett, Don J. Webber and Chay Brooks

Chapter 6 in Developing Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, 2026, pp 95-111 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines the processes that make an entrepreneurial ecosystem function effectively and outlines four strands of activity that are key for understanding the processes that make entrepreneurial ecosystems function. These four strands of activity are making introductions and signposting entrepreneurs, facilitating networks and creating communities, easing information flows between institutions, and constructing the narrative of the entrepreneurial ecosystem; together we term these Ecosystem Development Work. Easing information flows between institutions is key for us to start to understand how institutions within an entrepreneurial ecosystem coalesce. By recognising and acknowledging Ecosystem Development Work, we start to unpack the mechanisms that make an entrepreneurial ecosystem function. Collaboration between institutions relies on individuals undertaking Ecosystem Development Work to be proactive and communicate with their counterparts. In other words, it is the people within those institutions who are key to unlocking the coalescence of an entrepreneurial ecosystem.
