Conclusions to Developing Entrepreneurial Ecosystems

Laura I.H Bennett, Don J. Webber and Chay Brooks

Chapter 9 in Developing Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, 2026, pp 169-182 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this conclusion, we outline the major contributions of this book and present the key scholarly and policy insights generated through our research. First, we argue that our findings show the importance of relational ties for understanding the dynamics and processes that take place within entrepreneurial ecosystems. Second, we explore the problems with geographical boundaries and region-centric narratives of the ecosystem. Specifically, we argue that differing layers of place-based belonging and entrepreneurial experiences (early-stage and late-stage) create gaps in provision and disjointed levels of support for entrepreneurs. We introduce the notion of Ecosystem Development Work (EDW) and the roles of stakeholders, both entrepreneur and non-entrepreneur, in the processes that enliven and enable entrepreneurial ecosystems. Finally, we present the implications of our research for policy and practice and discuss possible future directions in entrepreneurial ecosystems research.
