Abstract:
Design plays a vital role as the world moves towards a more sustainable future. Designers are mindful of creating sustainable designs as they innovate for aesthetic, functional, economic, and socio-cultural reasons. However, in some circumstances, designers and manufacturers design products for obsolescence: a product with a limited shelf life. This means that not all designs benefit consumers. Increasingly, consumers are becoming better informed about the environmental impact of their products and frustrated with the early demise of their smart devices and consumer products. Consumers view sustainable design for manufacture, disassembly and maintenance as desirable, and evidence of a growing Right to Repair movement supports this. As consumers become more aware of their environmental impact, it is crucial for designers and design law to keep pace with the global goals of circularity and sustainability, ultimately delivering a sustainable future.
