Introduction to Conversations with Leading Transport Researchers

Chris De Gruyter

Chapter 1 in Conversations with Leading Transport Researchers, 2026, pp 1-5 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Academia is fraught with many unwritten rules. Understanding how to go about various research activities, from generating research ideas to supervising research students, is something that is often only learnt through speaking with more experienced academics. The aim of this book is to provide guidance to research students and early-career researchers on the unwritten rules of academia, drawing on insights from interviews with 20 world-leading transport researchers. While the intended audience of the book is research students and early career researchers, it is also expected to appeal to professionals contemplating a move to academia in a later stage of their career. This chapter outlines the motivations, intended audience and aim of this book. It also details the methodology associated with selecting and inviting interview participants, conducting the interviews and preparing the transcripts.
