Abstract:
Fred Mannering is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Executive Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Research at the University of South Florida in the United States. In this chapter, Fred responds to a number of research-related questions, grouped under a total of 11 themes: (1) motivation; (2) research ideas and execution; (3) collaboration; (4) funding; (5) supervision; (6) publication; (7) reviewing and editing; (8) conferences and seminars; (9) communication and research impact; (10) time management; and (11) reflections and the future of transport research. Among other aspects, Fred reflects on the need to have a strong commitment to high-quality research, how life experiences can help to generate new ideas for research, and the importance of quality over quantity in research publications.
